As you increase your awareness about how your body moves and how it responds to exercise your ability to get more out of any exercise equipment increases.
As a beginner, keep it simple and safe. Selectorized machines that control your movement without stressing you to change the load work better than free weight loading machines.
For those of you interested in functional movements, body weight is the best exercise equipment and whatever helps you move your body, like a pull up bar or a dip bar. TRX is a great option.
